Stop Using AI Like Google: Master Prompting with the C.R.E.O. Model

Master effective AI prompting by moving beyond search queries and adopting the C.R.E.O. model (Context, Role, Explicit Task, Output) for tailored, actionable results.

Stop Using AI Like Google: Master Prompting with the C.R.E.O. Model

Let’s face it, we all use AI these days. We have stopped ‘Googling’ things and head to our preferred AI Model to find the information at hand.

But most people are using these magnificent tools just like another search engine. It is so much more than that. I have come across this situation with my friends & family, and helped them achieve their goals more effectively and efficiently. I am here to share that with you too.

There is a process you need to follow to get the exact output you need - regardless of the task at hand. We will pick a sample task and use that for our purposes here. Let’s say you are trying to create your resume to apply for a position of Marketing Head at a hospitality chain.

Don’t just state the output: Create my resume using the details below to apply for the position of Marketing Head at a hospitality chain.

Do: Use the C.R.E.O model to get the perfect output. C - Context R - Role E - Explicit Task O - Output

Let’s look at these individually.

Context: Start with the context of what is going on - this is like the background of the task at hand. It helps the model create a picture of what is going on. For this instance: “I am applying for the position of Marketing Head at XYZ, a hospitality chain in Kathmandu.”

Role: Tell the AI what you want it to act as, give it a role for it to fulfill. It will bear the personality of what you assign it to do. In this scenario, “You are a seasoned resume-writer with in-depth knowledge of what recruiters and HR in the hospitality industry look for.”

Explicit Task: Now is where you begin to define the task at hand. “I have attached my old resume to this prompt. I need you to prepare a top-class resume to support my application.”

Output: This is where you define what you want to achieve. Tell it how you want the response formatted or any additional things to consider for the output. What I like to use is something like this: “Before you build my resume’s content, please ask me questions that might help you prepare the perfect document.” Before & After Comparison Without C.R.E.O. (Generic Output):

Prompt: “Create my resume using the details below to apply for the position of Marketing Head at a hospitality chain.”

AI Result: Generates a resume template with generic bullet points like “Managed marketing team” and “Increased brand awareness.” It lacks industry-specific strategy, local market context (e.g., Kathmandu hospitality sector), and impactful metrics.

With C.R.E.O. (Tailored Output): Prompt: (Includes Context, Role, Explicit Task, and Output instructions) AI Result: “I’d be happy to act as your expert resume writer for the Marketing Head position in Kathmandu’s hospitality market! To craft the most compelling resume, please answer 3 quick questions:

  1. What key revenue, occupancy, or campaign growth metrics are you most proud of?
  2. What specific hospitality segments (e.g., luxury, boutique, resort) or local networks do you specialize in?
  3. Should we emphasize digital acquisition, brand storytelling, or PR/partner relations?” Notice the difference? Instead of spitting out generic placeholder text, the C.R.E.O. model prompts the AI to act as an expert asking targeted questions to extract your strongest achievements before writing.

Try it out and you will notice the difference.
